“Tryna Smoke” is the logical concluding point for the album’s first half, full of passion and drama (perhaps in allusion to her 2019 breakup with Big Sean, although they’re back together now). The effect is immersively, enjoyably dirty.

The beat strips itself down and straps on a distorted kick of percussion, hesitant and sensual in its pattern. Near the end of the song, something a little psychedelic happens. It represents a fantastic strain of R&B: relaxed, honest, funky, with a bass line sweet as candy paint. That track, “Tryna Smoke,” deals with exactly what the title suggests: She wants to get high and rise above “ the bullshit confusion on the ground.” Aiko, one of the world’s great weed smokers, seems to smoke up mid-song (“ You better blow that shit out, man,” she mutters).
